Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the new terminal at Bahir Dar Dejazmach Belay Zeleke International Airport on August 6, 2026, marking a major milestone for one of Ethiopia's key aviation gateways and a significant boost for tourism to the Amhara region.

The newly built terminal was designed to international standards with a strong focus on passenger comfort and a welcoming visitor experience. It expands the airport's overall capacity through upgraded aircraft facilities, modernized infrastructure, improved access roads, and enhanced passenger amenities.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Abiy described the terminal as more than a modern facility, calling it a symbol of resilience and continued investment following the recent challenges Bahir Dar has faced. He noted that, together with the broader urban transformation underway in the city, the terminal positions Bahir Dar as a key hub for both domestic and international flights.

The Prime Minister also emphasized Bahir Dar's long-standing role as one of Ethiopia's most important historical and commercial centers, citing its strategic location, rich heritage, and status as a gateway linking central and northern Ethiopia. He affirmed that ongoing government investment aims to establish the city as a leading hub for tourism, trade, and business while preserving its cultural identity.

For ETOA members and tour operators, the expanded terminal is expected to significantly ease access to Bahir Dar and the wider Lake Tana and Amhara region — a destination renowned for its monasteries, the Blue Nile Falls, and rich cultural heritage — supporting stronger connectivity for both international and domestic travel itineraries.
