Ethiopian Airlines has resumed flights to Lalibela (LLI) and Mekelle (MQX), restoring vital air access for tourism to northern Ethiopia. Axum and Shire airports remain suspended. ETOA will update members once the sites officially reopen for tourists.
The Ethiopian Tour Operators Association (ETOA) is pleased to share an important update on air connectivity to northern Ethiopia.
Ethiopian Airlines has resumed flights to Lalibela (LLI) and Mekelle (MQX), marking a positive step for tourism access to these key destinations. Flights to Lalibela resumed in early October, with Ethiopian Airlines operating its regular Addis Ababa–Lalibela service. Mekelle flights resumed on October 11, 2026, following a three-week suspension.
This development restores vital air links for travelers and tour operators planning itineraries to Lalibela's famous rock-hewn churches and Mekelle in the Tigray region. Axum and Shire airports remain suspended at this time.
From a tourism perspective, the resumption of these routes represents encouraging progress toward normalizing travel access in northern Ethiopia. Members and travelers are advised to contact Ethiopian Airlines directly for the latest flight schedules and booking information, and to monitor official notifications before finalizing any travel arrangements.
Important Note: Once the sites officially reopen for tourists, ETOA will provide further updates to keep members and travelers informed.
ETOA will continue to share relevant updates as they become available.
