Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 9 November 2025 – The Ethiopian Tour Operators Association (ETOA) has marked a historic achievement for the nation's tourism sector by being elected to the Affiliate Members Board of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) for a four-year term. The election took place during the 45th UNWTO Affiliate Members Plenary Session, held in conjunction with the 26th General Assembly of the organization in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

ETOA's President, Mr. Fitsum Gezahegne Lakew, will represent the African continent on this influential global board, ensuring that Africa’s and Ethiopia's interests are directly represented in international tourism governance.

Demonstrating the growing recognition of Ethiopia's leadership, ETOA was also nominated as a candidate for the Vice-Chair position. Although the role was not secured, the nomination alone stands as a powerful endorsement of ETOA's credibility and the high esteem in which it is held by its global peers.

"We are immensely proud of this dual accomplishment. Our election to the board solidifies our place at the table, while our Vice-Chair nomination confirms that our voice is not only heard but respected," said Mr. Fitsum Gezahegne Lakew, President of ETOA. "This is a victory for every tour operator in Ethiopia. It provides an unprecedented opportunity to share our unique story, learn from global best practices, and attract more attention to our incredible country."

The 45th Plenary Session in Riyadh served as a significant platform for Ethiopia. Mr. Fitsum Gezahegne was joined by a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Tourism, including Dr. Endegena Abebe, State Minister of Tourism, and Ato Asfaw Kitaw, Advisor to the Minister of Tourism. Their presentations effectively showcased Ethiopia's vast tourism potential and commitment to sustainable development to a global audience.

This new board position will empower ETOA to better advocate for Ethiopian and African tour operators, foster international partnerships, and drive growth and innovation within the national and continental tourism industry.
